The Gunnison River forms at the confluence of the
Taylor River and the East River in Almont, Colorado. The river
is well known for producing big browns and rainbows, as well as
having a fall kokanee run. In the summer of 2003, the new Colorado
State record rainbow of 19 pounds, 10 ounces was caught out of
the Gunnison below Blue Mesa Reservoir. Don't be suprised if you
spot some huge fish, browns well over 20 pounds are scattered throughout
the river, especially in the Black Canyon. The canyon is well-known
for its big fish, especially rainbows in the 20+ inch range. These
fish are virtually untouched, as it is extremely difficult to hike
into the canyon. The hiking may be tough, but if you make it in
the fishing can be extremely rewarding. |
