The South Platte River is one of the most famous
and beautiful rivers in Colorado. It flows through various sections
nicknamed "The Dream Stream, Eleven Mile Canyon, Deckers,
and Cheeseman Canyon. The Dream Stream is probably the most well
known stretch and for good reason, it holds BIG fish. This section
between Spinney Mountain Reservior and Eleven Mile Reservior is
home to rainbows, cutthroats, and browns. Spring brings in Rainbow
and Cutthroat up to 10 pounds, but the main runs usually only last
for about a 3 week period. Fall brings in the Kokanee Salmon,
which
are
usually
followed by the Browns, some of which may top 30 inches. The majority
of the season, the stream is packed full of 14-20 inch fish, mostly
rainbows. Eleven Mile Canyon is one of the prettiest sections ofthe
river and also holds some really nice rainbows. Deckers recently
got hit
hard
by the fire, but also holds some really nice rainbows and browns.
Cheeseman is another beautiful canyon and is known for producing
rainbows
that eagerly take dry flys. |
