We an extra day or two on our trip, so we decided
to make a stop on the "Dream Stream" and then check out
Eleven Mile Canyon on our way back home. We didn't have high expectations,
as the water levels had been fluctuating a lot lately and we heard
the water temperature was high. We decided to fish the middle section
of the river near the barns and work our way upstream. It wasn't
long before I hooked into a monster 4 inch brown. These little
guys were everywhere and we quickly deemed it the "brown trout
hatch." The
fish must have been gorging themselves on these little browns,
as they had no interest in the midges we were throwing at them.
We continued up river and I was surprised when I came to the top
of one of the bend pools, as there was a pod of three rainbows
in the
20-22
inch
range.
As
I
was planning
my
attack, a big brown popped out of a bed of weeds and grabbed
one of the little browns swimming by. I tried for a while to entice
the brown, but with no luck and didn't manage to land any of the
rainbows. We worked our way upriver and we again surprised to
find a lot of fish in the 20-26 inch range. I was dragging a wooly
bugger next to me when a big 22 inch cutthroat came and grabbed
it and swam off. I set the hook, but only managed to pull it right
out of its mouth. I hooked another female brown close to 28 inches
on the wooly bugger and again pulled the hooks out. While frustrating,
it was still exciting to see so many big fish in this river. I
switched to a rabbit zonker when we reached the upper section and
we worked our way back downstream. After missing 3 more fish, I
finally landed an 18 inch rainbow. We missed a couple more fish
each and I hooked a monster rainbow right as it was getting dark,
but had it break off. We returned early the next day, determined
to land one of these hawgs. Jerry landed a nice 14 inch brown and
missed a couple more are we worked the top and middle sections.
We returned to the pool where I had seen the rainbows and nice
brown the previous day. We took turns fishing the rainbows and
again the big brown popped up out of the weeds. I threw the rabbit
zonker back in where it had been and felt it stop. At first I thought
I had snagged up on the weeds, but then I saw a tail come out.
The fish continued to try to bury itself in the weeds, but I managed
to pull it out and get it turned into the net. It was a pretty
22 inch male brown with a crazy pattern of spots. We tried fishing
the
trico
hatch later that morning, but they didn't want anything to do with
what we were throwing. We decided to head down into the canyon
and were pleasantly
surprised, as it was one the prettiest places I have ever fished.
And...There were rainbows everywhere! We landed a couple fish
each on
San Juans,
midges, and pheasant tails. It was a blast to fish such a cool
place and catch a lot of fish.
