We decided to head out on the last day before the
opener and try the Rush, knowing that it would be crowded. We
arrived early afternoon and surprisingly, there weren't too many
cars in the lot. We decided we would hike upstream until we got
away from all of the other fishermen. After a 30 minute hike,
we had a whole stretch of water to ourselves. I had spotted a
pod of fish holder in the shade of a tree and managed to hook
a couple before heading upriver. We came to a deeper pool and
could see a couple of browns holding down on the bottom that
were in the 18-22 inch range. We spent some time working the
fish, but didn't manage any strikes. Rob decided to continue
upriver to try some holes we had found a couple of weeks prior.
I quickly picked up another nice 14 brown upriver, before finally
settling on one nice deeper pool. I would occasionally see the
fish in the tail and could tell the pool was just full of them.
I proceeded to catch fish after fish, with two of them being
in the 17-19 inch range. I hopped up to the next pool and also
continued to slam fish. By the time Rob came back down I had
managed to catch over 30 fish between the two pools in less than
2 hours. It was by far my best day on the river. The fish didn't
seem picky, but preferred larger beadhead flies like a hare's
ear or pheasant tail. |
