Rapid Creek is the most famous of the trout creeks in the Blacks Hills. The river flows out from below Pactola Reservoir and continues on downstream through Rapid City. The first large pool below the dam has some of the largest fish in the river. You can easily spot four different species of fish, all posibly over 20 inches. These fish are huge, but aren't easily fooled. This section holds huge rainbows and browns, and some really big cutts and brookies. Another section with large fish is right in town at the city park. You can spot large rainbows all over in the pond connected to the creek. The state record came from this stretch, close to 18 pounds. The upper end near the hatchery holds some nice rainbows, while the lower end near the dam hold a lot of big browns.
