The most famous stretch of the Yampa River is the small tailwater located below Stagecoach Reservoir. It is less fished than the other more popular tailwaters in the state, but holds fish just as big. If you can get on the river early during the week, you might find you have the entire river to yourself. The river has a healthy population of rainbows and browns, with a occassional brookie. The river's rainbows tend to average 18-20 inches, with an occasional larger fish. Every pool tends to hold a couple of fish, but they spook easily and are not easy to catch. The fishing is also good in the town of Yampa for rainbows and browns.
