We had heard good things about the Yampa and after
looking into the first hole and seeing it full of fish, we knew
we were going to have a good time. We all worked the upper section
and managed to hook into some nice fish. Each hole produced 2-3
fish as we made our way downriver. We quickly named the fish "kamakazee
rainbows" because these things were nuts. You would hook them
and they would jump downriver like steelhead. I even had one jump
up into a tree on shore. Jerry and Rob both hooked into 20 inch
rainbows and I was having fun fishing for a 22 incher. We came
back early the next morning and Jerry quickly landed the largest
rainbow of the trip. After working the fish for a couple of minutes
it finally took his fly. After a short fight, the 22 inch rainbow
tired and I managed to get it in the net. I found another large
bow in the bottom of a deep pool and after fishing for it for close
to 45 minutes, I realized that it was just a weed flowing in the
current. I did manage to land a 14 inch brookie. I wasn't
expecting to land any brook trout, but it helped me to complete
a Colorado Grand Slam for the trip. The fish weren't picky about
flies, but
they
were
easily
spooked. The best flies were various midges, pheasant tails, black
beauties, and miracle numphs.
