The Vermillion is a beautiful free-flowing stream located just south of the Twin Cities. I was introduced to this river by one of my fishing buddies, Justin, who had told me repeatedly about its huge fish. Having fished a lot of Minnesota trout streams and never catching a brown anywhere near 20 inches, I was skeptical. He finally brought me with and on my third trip out I managed to land a male that was well over 20 inches. We kept the river a secret for years, but recently the river has been well publicized, so a lot of our favorite holes have gotten fished pretty hard. We still have a couple of secret hole that we fish when the river gets crowded and Justin has started guiding on the river through his website, Urban Bone Fisher. The trout are few, but the ones caught can be reach huge proportions. The average trout on this river are over 16 inches, with many fish in the 18-20 inch range. Mostly browns are caught, but an occasional rainbow can be hooked. This river is currently being threatened by major development in the area.
