Our first morning we started out fishing above
the bridge in the area known as the “Hawg Trough.” My
first fish softly took the nymph from between two boulders and
shot out from between the rocks. After many leaps the fish was
brought in only to have it take another run and snap my 6X tippet.
It was a nice 20 plus inch brown. Soon after I hooked into
another large brown only to have it spit the fly. The PMD’s
began hatching in the afternoon, but the fish were content to
stay deep. We came back in the evening and discovered that fishing
at night was quite a bit different then during the day. The big
pool was packed with rainbows and browns between 5 and 10 pounds.
We began drifting mysis with indicators and it wasn't long before
Steve hooked into a large brown. After a long battle and me chasing
the fish up and down the river I managed to get the net under
the fish. It was a nice brown close to 6 pounds, Steve’s
largest fish ever. We let the fish go and Steve was finally content
to return to the tent to sleep, knowing that he had finally caught
a fish and outfished me for the day. There was no way I was leaving.
I continued fishing and after landing a couple of 4-5 pound browns,
I finally hooked into a large fish. I battled the fish for close
to 20 minutes, praying that it wouldn’t get off in one
of its long runs. Finally I got the fish in and I was shaking
as I pulled in out of the net. It was huge! It was one of the
biggest Rainbows I had ever seen. It was a male hook jaw trout
and it stretched out to 26 plus inches and weighed over 8 pounds.
It was my largest trout ever.We spent the next three nights fishing
and all together caught over fifty trout over 4 pounds including
Steve’s 7 pound Brown. I hooked my first double digit Rainbow
only to have my line snap after a long run into my backing. It
was some of the most amazing fishing of my life.
