The Sucker was running a little low, even after getting rain earlier in the week, but had some fish in the lower section. I landed the only fish of the night, a nice 21-inch buck. We got up early the next morning and got into the big pool at the bottom. The morning was really slow, with no fish caught and no signs of fish coming in. Late morning fish started coming in, some moving into shallow water and pairing up. I landed a sweet steelhead, close to 27 inches, another big male close to 8 pounds. Belisle and Tim both landed another male steelies close to 27 inches and I caught 3 more fish in the afternoon in the 22-25 inch range, all female hens and one being a fresh steelhead. We returned in the morning and I lost a couple of nice fish, but we couldn’t manage to get anything in. We headed over to the Knife, but decided to return in the late afternoon to see if any fish had come in with the rain. They were coming in at a pretty good pace and I was hooking up every 20 minutes or so. I ended up landing 7 more loopers in the 20-24 inch range and they each caught one more, most of the fish being fresh hens. We fished a lot of different patterns, with Mysis and Caddis pupa working well, as well as the egg-sucking leech. It seemed that brighter colors would spook the fish in the shallow water and fishing small flies was key.
