Justin from the Urban
Bone Fisher and I made our
now annual trip up to the North Shore to fish Loopers and Steelhead
for the weekend. We were putting on our waders when a Wisconsin
van pulled up and out popped MP from the Rambling
Reports. I had
forgotten that he had said he was headed up with Fatman, Red Hat,
and the rest of his fishing crew. We headed down to the river and
were excited to find that there were fish around. The water was
lower then we expected, but the fish started coming in as it grew
closer to evening. They began pairing up in the shallow water,
making them easy targets. I hooked up with and landed 3 fish, all
on the now deadly egg-sucking leech pattern. Justin also landed
a couple of fish before we headed back to the hotel to meet up
with his dad. We headed out early the next morning and made sure
to get our hot spot. I hooked two nice females swinging San Juan’s
through the tail end of the pool. The shallow water was hot as
MP’s crew was nailing fish everywhere. He was fishing a new
bamboo rod and was having trouble setting the hook on the big Loopers.
As we were talking he hooked into his first bamboo fish. I netted
the Looper and took a couple of shots of the fish for him. We met
up with Belisle, Tom, and Smitty, who all had a blast catching
fish in the lower section down by the Lake. Tom landed his first
fish on his fly rod, looking like an expert. I managed five fish,
with the early and morning producing the most fish. We returned
again early the next morning and again got into our spot. The shallow
water was again the hotspot and the fish were paired up early.
We managed to hook a couple of fish, but Justin was the only one
to land one. Egg Sucking leeches produced the most fish, with bright
colored San Juans and Egg patterns producing in the deeper holes.
We didn’t manage any hawgs this year or any steelhead, most
of the fish were in the 22-26 inch range.
