The Sucker was running a little high, but the temperature was close to 40 degrees and the fish were in. Justin landed only fish of the night, a nice buck close to 25 inches. We were the first ones on the river the next morning and decided to try the first big hole up by the lake. I managed to hook and land another nice male close to 25 inches on a small egg pattern, but overall the fishing was pretty slow. Justin tried out in the lake without any success, but did see a lot of fish surfacing. I worked my way down stream and tied into a big fish in the last pool, but had it break off as it took off back down to the lake. We decided to try heading up river to get away from the people, hoping maybe some fish had moved up river. On the way up Justin hooked and landed a fat female close to 24 inches out of the riffles. The fish was fresh and full of eggs. We found a pool above the bridge that wasn’t being fished, hoping that maybe some fish had made it up that far. I soon had a snag, but after jerking on it a couple of times it swam off. It ended up being a huge 28 inch male, one of the prettiest fish I have ever caught. Justin hooked up with a sweet golden male steelie close to 26 inches and we continued pulling fish out of the hole the rest of the afternoon. The fish were all in the 22-26 inch range and all steelhead. The fish only seemed to take smaller flies, especially small eggs and San Juans.
