We started out in Island Park and didn't get far
before we started spotting fish. I found a couple holding in
a deeper pool behind along stretch of riffles. It took a while
to get a good drift through the hole, but I was finally hooked
up. The fish mostly stayed in the pool before heading upriver.
Rob came down with the net and netted the fish before it could
get back down to the pool. It wasn't the longest brown I've caught
at 31 inches, but the belly on this fish was huge. He headed
right back down to the bottom of the pool when we let him go.
I fished the pool for another hour hooking a couple more fish
and landing another male and female. Rob managed a couple of
hook-ups and landed one king, but didn't get any browns.
We started in the same area the next morning and
found a couple of fish holding in the shallower water. I managed
to land another nice female, but there weren't as many fish around
as the previous evening. We headed to Lincoln Park where we spotted
a pair of fish holding in a riffle. Rob managed to hook up with
the larger fish, a monster female brown. She headed up river
into the faster water before he turned her back down river. I
netted the fish down river and we measured her at 30 inches before
letting her go. We occasionally spotted fish, but didn't manage
any more hook-ups. We did spot one king that was on the crusty
side. It was by far the largest I've seen, in the 40-42 inch
range. The best flies were darker streamers, wooly buggers, and
egg-sucking leeches. The water was flowing at around 80-90 cfs. |
