We arrived early in Lincoln Park and soon spotted
fish moving in and out of the shallow water. We began casting in
the shallow riffles and it wasn't long before I was hooked up.
The big brown rolled on the surface, but I had it fouled. I managed
to pull my hook loose and as I was getting ready to cast out again
I noticed a monster female brown sitting right behind my leg. I
tried to get her to take a fly, but she has no interest in my fly.
I called the rest of the group over and soon Jessie hooked into
a nice female brown close to 26 inches. The rest of the morning
was fairly slow with an occasional fish coming up out the deeper
water, but returning after a couple of casts. Justin hooked into
a monster fish that way lying right next to the wall. It was a
big 33 inch male hook-jaw brown. It was a pretty fish with bright
orange sides and was still fresh. In the afternoon I decided to
head up river and try fishing the pools in Colonial. Jessie and
I each had one hook up, but still no fish outside of a 6 inch smolt.
I fished up at the dam in the evening with only one hookup but
no fish.
I started the next morning at the dam and quickly
landed a nice 16 inch brown. The fish were active, but I was unable
to
get any more fair hook-ups. We headed back down to Lincoln and
I took off scouting in Island Park. I went to one of my favorite
riffles and sure enough, there were two monster males sitting
in the tail end of a pool. I managed to hook the larger of the
two
fish and took off downstream with it. After a short fight I landed
the fish, a 34 inch male brown. As I was releasing the fish I
spotted another pod of 4-5 fish holding in a lower riffle. I called
Jessie
down and after a couple of casts he tied into the female. She was
a fat hen brown full of eggs and pushing 30 inches. I continued
to work down river and spotted another female up on a sand bar.
I got her to take the fly and she got all rolled up in my line
as she tumbled down river. I managed to get her up on shore, but
the line broke as I ran down to her and she swam off across the
river. As I was walking down river I spotted the white camero we
have grown familiar with. MP was up fishing Island park with some
of his buddies. We chatted for a short while and he headed up river
to try the deeper water. I continued to work my way down river
and was soon tied into another male. He took off up stream and
after another short fight I managed to land this fish. He was another
fat male, close to 31 inches. I returned to Lincoln Park and after
fishing the stretch of water near the steelhead facility, I return
to find Justin and Ben. Justin had just landed a monster 36 inch
brown and Ben had also landed another big male close to 31 inches.
We tried for one last female that we had seen flashing is a deeper
pool, but were unable to get her to take a fly. The water was low,
around 70 cfs and the water temperature was 35-36 degrees for most
of the weekend. We had better success downgrading flies to the
smaller stuff, mostly small egg flies and stonefly patterns. |
