The Root was flowing pretty high when we arrived
late afternoon, so we decided to head up to the dam. They had
passed around 350 fish earlier in the week, so we were hoping
that they had made it up to the top of the river. There were
a couple of guys around and they were catching some fish.
We
lined up under the bridge and it wasn't long before I was hooked
up... To a sucker. They were in there thick and I must have caught
close to 50 over the weekend. I did briefly hook up with one
steelhead, but we only managed to land two fish between the four
of us. We probably lost another 4-5 fish.
We were the first ones on the river in the morning
and took up the same spots below the dam. Still lots of suckers
around, but I did managed to land two smaller steelhead in the
23-24 inch range. Jeff landed another nice fish downstream in
the faster
water and Rob also hooked into a couple of fish. Overall, the
fishing was much slower than the previous evening, probably due
to the lower water temperature.
The flows were around 450 cfs the first day,
coming down to 350 cfs the second day. The water temps were in
the mid to high 30's, topping 40 degrees late afternoon, which
may have made the fishing a little tougher. All of the fish were
the Chambers
Creek
strain,
as the
Ganaraska
fish had not started running yet. The best flies were small egg
flies in orange or pink, San Juan worms, and brightly colored
wooly buggers. The water clarity was poor. We were about a week
early, as there were a lot of anglers with 10+ fish
days
the
following
weekend. |
