We knew the Root would be high and dirty, but after
fishing high water last year, we were optimistic that we could
hook into some fish. The crowd below the dam indicated that some
people were landing fish. It was only a couple of casts before
I hooked into the first fish. It was a spawned out 26 inch female
that didn’t have a whole lot of fight left in her. We snapped
a couple of photos and let her go. Jerry soon hooked into a nice
fish and the fight was on. It is not any easy battle when you fight
a steelhead with a 5 wt., but Jerry battled the fish and I took
off down stream after it. After a couple of leaps it headed down
river and swam straight into a log jam. I managed to ease the fish
out and get the net under her. It was his largest steelhead, a
nice 29 inch female. With a big grin on his face Jerry and a couple
of handshakes, he let her swim off. It was now Tim’s turn
and he didn’t disappoint. He hooked into another female that
took him downstream. As I grabbed the net and headed downstream,
his hooks popped out. We spent another hour without even a bump.
We returned the next day around noon and spent the next couple
of hours hooking up with and trying not to catch…suckers.
They were everywhere and they seemed especially fond of egg patterns.
At one point I managed to pull out three on three casts. I did
briefly hook up with a steelhead. It came up and rolled on the
surface, only to have the hook pop out. Again bright patterns produce,
with the fish all hooked on San Juan Worms, egg patterns, and streamer
patterns.
