The Little Red River, near Heber Springs, is home to the world record Brown Trout. The trout caught by Rip Collins on May 2, 1992 and weighed 40 pounds, 4 ounces. There are rumors of larger browns in the river, but no one has landed a larger trout to date. Trout in many sections of this river average 14-16 inches, with many larger fish in the 20+ inch range. Trout up to 20+ pounds are often spotted and hooked in the fall, but rarely caught. The river also produces the occasional 10+ pound rainbow and has a good population of brook trout. Fall and early Winter tend to be the best times to target the monster fish as they move up onto the shoals during the spawning season. The best places to target the larger fish are below right below the dam in JFK Park, Cow Shoals, Libby Shoals, and Mossy Shoals.
