We arrived at the Blue River hoping to find some of the huge bows we had been hearing about. We headed up towards the outlet malls and began fishing below the Nike bridge. There was a nice rainbow close to four pounds right below the bridge. The bridge was filled with people all trying to tell me where the fish was and how far to cast. After a couple of casts, I managed to hook the rainbow. After a short run, the fish managed to spit the hook. The fish returned but wasn’t feeding anymore and wouldn’t take any flies. The next day we found a couple of larger rainbows in the first pool above the hwy bridge, but the area was already being fished so we moved further upstream. I started fishing some riffles and soon caught a small brown right on the edge of some pocket water. The excitement for the day was when a huge rainbow, close to 8 pounds, came flying down river and almost ran into me. It stopped in the riffles about 10 feet down from me, but wouldn’t take a fly. The temperature was in the 20’s in the mornings/evenings and in the 40’s towards afternoon. The best fly was the WD40 in a black or chocolate color, but fishermen were also having some success with candy canes and mysis shrimp.
