After watching two guys hammer fish the night before, we decided to start out by the Nike bridge and work our way upstream. The fish were selective, but we both managed a couple of rainbows in the 14-16 inch range. Jerry hooked and lost a nice cutththroat right below the bridge. We headed up above the I-70 bridge where Jerry hooked a nice 19 inch fish that was holding in a rifle. About halfway up, I spotted another nice rainbow close to 20 inches. It took some work, but I finally got it to take a red midge and worked it into the net downstream, after a short fight. We spotted some other fish as we worked towards the dam, but didn't land any. The fish were looking a little skinny compared to our Spring trip and didn't have quite the fight we had become a custom to on this river. It appears the low flows this summer are having their toll on the fish, but there were still a lot around to be caught. The best flies were black beauties, candy canes, miracle nymphs, and red midges. The water was flowing at around 50 cfs.
