We started out early in the morning, fishing right
past the bridge below the dam. I was drifting mysis down into some
boulders, when I caught my first blue river trout, a nice 14-inch
brown. A couple of casts later I pulled a smaller brown from the
same spot. Rob was fishing dries to rising fish, but with no luck.
We moved downstream and I picked up another small brown with a
Deerfield special right at the head of a rapids. The fishing slowed
and we decided to move up into Breckenridge and fish just off the
road. This part of the stream is dammed up and has pools
filled with brookies. The brook trout were eager to pick off our
dry flies and an occasional rainbow was also caught. I finished
the day with a nice 16-inch brown, just a cutthroat away from a
Colorado “Grand Slam.” We decided to try fishing above
Dillon in a place that Rob had had previous success. The water
was relatively shallow, with most of it moving fairly fast. My
deerfield special managed to entice 2 small browns to rise and
take the dry fly, but no real big fish. The best dry flies were
the Deerfield Special, the Peacock, and Griffith’s Gnat.
Rob had most of his success with an Adams. Mysis worked the best
near the dam fished under an indicator.
