We had some extra time and decided to stop by the Blue on the way to Estes Park. We had low expectations as low water and high fishing pressure has really hurt the river the last couple of years. We were pleasantly surprised. The fish that were stocked this summer have spread out in the river and have really improved the fishery. The first pool I stopped at held 4-5 rainbows, all in the 18-20 inch range. I managed to catch two fish and caught another out of the pool above. I decided to make my way downriver were Tim had landed a couple of fish. After we met up, he headed upstream and I decided to check out the river down by the Hwy Bridge. The river was packed with bows below the bridge. I picked out the largest one and within a couple of casts I was hooked up. It took me downstream and through a falls before I coaxed it into the net. It was a beautiful female with a bright red stripe on her belly. I could have caught fish under the bridge all day, but we ran out of time to continue fishing. The water was low, around 50 cfs, and our favorite flies for this river, the miracle nymph and the black beauty, produced again.
