It was near zero degrees when we arrived at the Root and within a couple casts both of our rods were frozen up. After getting the ice off, Justin was soon hooked up with a rainbow. A couple of casts later, I landed another rainbow and we continued to catch fish pretty consistantly out of the same hole. There must have been close to 100 fish in the pool, as we each landed around 20-25 trout. It was probably a 50/50 split between rainbows and browns, with a 13 inch brown being the largest caught. We caught a couple fish upriver in some faster water, but for the most part the fish were all podded up in the deeper pools. The weather never got above freezing, but we managed to land a lot of fish. The best flies were, pheasant tails, San Juans, halfbacks, scuds, pink squirels, and prince nymphs.
