We decided to try the stretch of river located above Carbondale, which was mostly fasting moving pocket water with some slower moving water along the edges. We arrived at the river in the evening towards the end of a PMD hatch, but didn’t find a lot of fish rising. We starting out throwing wooly buggers along the banks but didn't manage any strikes. We put the indicators and began fishing the pockets. We found a fish or two behind every boulder, my first fish being a 14-inch rainbow. The fish were a lot of fun, especially when they got out into the current. After catching a few smaller rainbows, I tied into a nice 20-inch bow. It was a nice surprise and I ended up chasing it down the river quite a ways before landing it.We returned the next morning with high expectations. We were excited to wade up river to to fish some new streches of water. We were also hoping to find “Old Growler”, a legendary monster brown rumored to be close to 32 inches. Fishing proved to be tough, we landed only 3 small browns, the biggest being 12 inches. We had the most success with Pheasant Tails and Copper Johns, but San Juans and Prince Nymphs also caught some nice fish.
