We arrived at the Oconto around midnight and decided
to spend the night casting off of the pier. There were fish everywhere,
feeding on bait fish and rolling on the surface. We stayed up for
around 4 hours casting, managing only a couple of strikes, but
none of the fish stayed hooked. We had high expectations when we
arrived at the Stiles dam later that morning. Fish were rolling
everywhere and we raced down to the water in anticipation of a
good day. We were a little disappointed to discover that the majority
of the fish were carp. There were a couple of chinooks in the deeper
water, but as soon as we hopped in they made themselves scarce.
Justin wandered down river and we continued to fish the deeper
water up by the dam. After not having a single hook-up for over
2 hours we made our way down river to find Justin. There he was
walking up the river with a huge King in his net. The big female
topped out in the 20-25 pound range and it was a monster. Jesse
managed to hook up with another King, but that was all we managed
for the rest of the morning. They had success with chartreuse cactus
buggers and found the fish in shallower water. |
