The Root was muddy and there were surprisingly few fisherman on the river. After checking out the Steelhead weir and finding it jammed full of 12-14 pound browns, we were excited to get down to the river. We started out on a stretch down river from the weir and soon spotted a couple of fish rolling on the surface. I was soon hooked up with a big fish, which proceeded to swim circles around me before bolting downstream. It rolled and showed a pink side, but came unhooked as it took off downstream, meaning it was either a steelhead or big coho. It was the only fish we hooked up with the rest of the day. The water was extremely muddy, making it difficult for the fish to pick up our flies.
